Why we love K-dramas and you should too!
If you haven't seen any K-dramas yet, you should definitely do so! Here's why:
Korean dramas have been a staple of daily television in Asia for decades, and for the past few years they've even been gaining popularity worldwide. This is partly thanks to the breakthrough of K-pop, which has drawn the attention of the whole world to South Korea. But the streaming service Netflix has also played a part in this. Since Netflix started adding K-dramas to its lineup a few years ago, and even producing its own, they've become much more accessible to many viewers. With hits like "Squid Game" and "Kingdom," Netflix has celebrated great achievements!
It's not hard to explain why dramas are so popular:
- Countless series in all kinds of genres offer an enormous amount of variety.
- For Western viewers in particular, many of the themes are new and refreshing.
- There is much less intimacy in K-dramas than in American series. Therefore, most are suitable for all ages.
- Generally, after 16 episodes, it's over. It's easier to commit to a new series if it doesn't consist of multiple seasons and the story has a cohesive ending in the foreseeable future.
For K-pop fans, there are even more reasons to watch K-dramas!
They teach us an lot of things in an entertaining way:
Viewers get glimpses into Korean culture and learn, among other things, what behavior is liked or disliked there. Perfect for those of us who plan to spend our vacation there someday! They also help to better understand other Korean shows, for example, those in which K-Pop Idols perform. There are certainly quite a few K-pop fans who have learned through K-dramas what speeches like "hyung" or "noona" are all about, and that respect for elders is very important in South Korea.
Historical dramas set in the "Joseon" or "Goryeo" periods also teach us a lot about Korean history. Although the plot and many characters are often fictional, there are some characters and events that are based on true events.
Of course, one of the biggest benefits of watching foreign series is that they help us learn the language! So if you want to have a conversation in Korean someday, it's helpful to watch Korean series to supplement your studies!
Many dramas also feature K-pop idols.
There's a good chance that one of your favorite stars has starred in a series before. In fact, there are some idols who have acting careers in addition to their music careers. Well-known examples would be D.O. from EXO, Eunwoo from Astro or Suzy!
The Soundtracks (O.S.T.)
K-dramas have beautiful soundtracks, including those sung by idol singers or even entire idol groups. In most cases, physical soundtrack albums are also sold. Like our beloved K-Pop albums, they usually consist of a photo book as well. Nowadays, they even include extras like photo cards, bookmarks, and postcards! So if you like collecting K-Pop albums, you should definitely take a look at O.S.T albums! Maybe your collection will soon include photo cards of your favorite actors?
