BIOGRAPHY

Bang Chan (방찬 bangchan) was born on October 3, 1997 in Seoul, South Korea, but emigrated to Sydney, Australia, at a young age. He lived there with his parents, his younger sister Hannah Bahng and his younger brother Lucas Bahng. Through his father, who was a coach for swimmers at the Special Olympics, he discovered his passion for swimming at an early age. His great role model was his own father and he broke the record in the 50-meter free swim at the age of 8 in elementary school. Not only did he enjoy swimming, he also took dance lessons in ballet and modern dance at the Newton High School of Performing Arts in Sydney. His interest and talent in the arts therefore became apparent at an early age.

Im Jahr 2010 nahm er an einem Casting von JYP Entertainment in Australien teil, um seinem Traum ein Idol zu werden, ein Stück näher zu kommen. Er wurde als Trainee bei JYPE akzeptiert und zog daraufhin am 11.04.2011 mit 13 Jahren zurück in sein Geburtsland Südkorea. Von da an ging er zur Cheongdam High School und machte neben seiner harten Ausbildung bei JYPE dort seinen Abschluss. Während seiner Zeit als Trainee nannte ihn jeder bei seinem englischen Namen “Chris”. 7 Jahre lang sah er zu, wie viele seiner Freunde, wie BamBam (GOT7), Yugyeom (GOT7), Young K (DAY6), Sana (Twice) und Jimin (15&), ohne ihn debütierten, doch er gab nicht auf.

Ende 2016 gründete Bang Chan die Hip-Hop Unit 3RACHA mit den anderen beiden Trainees Han Jisung (“J.One”) und Seo Changbin (“SPEARB”). Er selbst nutze den Stage-Namen “CB97”. Innerhalb dieser Unit konnten die Jungs sich von einer ganz anderen Seite zeigen. Über das Jahr 2017 veröffentlichten sie gemeinsam selbst geschriebene und selbst produzierte Songs auf Soundcloud. Später arbeiteten sie sogar mit großen Namen wie SKI-HI zusammen und waren das Feature seines Songs JUST BREATHE (2022).

Am 11. Oktober 2017 kündigte JYPE die Survival Show “Stray Kids” an. Es passierte etwas vorher noch nie dagewesenes: In der Show wurde Bang Chan als Produzent, Sänger, Rapper und Tänzer und Leader des “Male Group Projects” vorgestellt. Das “Male Project Team” war von Anfang an etwas Besonderes, denn im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen K-Pop-Gruppen wurde es nicht von der Agentur gebildet. Stattdessen hatte Bang Chan selbst das Team aus insgesamt neun Mitgliedern zusammengestellt. Die Mitglieder waren: Bang Chan Lee Know, Han, Changbin, Felix, Hyunjin, Seungmin, I.N und Woojin.

In the last episode of the Survival show on Dec. 19, 2017, it was announced that the very group he put together would debut as it is. However, in October 2019, Woojin left the group for unknown reasons.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

In his career as the leader of the up-and-coming and charismatic group "Stray Kids", Bang Chan and his members reached several milestones and surpassed themselves with every comeback. As the list of their achievements is very long, we have recorded some of the most important milestones for you here:

• In August 2021, their album Noeasy sold over 1,127,800 copies. This was the first time that Stray Kids and a group from the label JYPE broke the million mark.
• In March 2022, their album ODDINARY reached number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts for the first time.
• In August 2022, Stray Kids became the third Korean band after BTS and BIGBANG to reach 10 million subscribers on YouTube.
• In October 2022, Stray Kids reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts for the second time in a row with MAXIDENT.
• In June 2023, Stray Kids reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts for the third time in a row with the album 5-STAR. They also broke the record for the most pre-ordered album in the history of K-pop at the time of its release.
• In November 2023, Stray Kids reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for the fourth consecutive year with their album ROCK-STAR. "LALALALA" also became their first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 90.

Eine richtige Solokarriere hat der Leader Bang Chan bisher noch nicht angestrebt. Er hat jedoch im Jahr 2020 auf dem Album SKZ Replay zwei Solo Songs veröffentlicht, die er selbst komponiert und produziert hat. Zuletzt veröffentlichte er auf dem offiziellen Youtube Account von “Stray Kids” den Solo Song “Eternity”, in dem er über die Beziehung zwischen ihm und seinem Hund Berry singt.

In November 2023, Bang Chan was officially registered with KOMCA (The Korea Music Copyright Association) at #6 with 180 songs registered in his name.

Diese Platzierung erreichte er, da er zusammen mit Han und Changbin im Namen der Unit 3RACHA, fast alle Songs für Stray Kids selbst schreibt und produziert. Somit ist Stray Kids eine der wenigen K-Pop-Gruppen, die ihre Songs selbst produzieren. Bang Chan produziert dazu regelmäßig Solo-Songs für seine Mitglieder, in denen er ebenfalls mitwirkt, die dann auf Youtube veröffentlicht werden, ohne einen Platz auf einem offiziellen Album zu erhalten.

In addition to his appearances in Stray Kids' own music videos, leader Bang Chan has also appeared in guest roles in music videos by other groups. From 2019 to 2023, Bang Chan was live on VLIVE every Sunday and later on YouTube. There he chatted with viewers, introduced songs that he was currently listening to or that fans suggested to him. From time to time, he showed small excerpts of unreleased songs and invited guests, such as his members or members of other groups with whom he got on well. This format has been paused indefinitely. He also irregularly uploads vlogs from his vacation or everyday life to YouTube.
