BIOGRAPHY

Mina, full name Myoui Mina, was born on 24 March 1997 in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in a family of Japanese expatriates – that is, Japanese people living and working abroad. Her parents, Sachiko (née Terao) and Akira Myoui, moved back to Japan while Mina was still a toddler and settled in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture. Her father, an orthopaedic surgeon at Osaka University Hospital, and her mother created a supportive environment for Mina.

From the age of three, Mina began training in classical ballet and devoted herself to the art form for eleven years. Her passion and talent for ballet were clearly visible, and she dreamed of becoming a professional ballet dancer. However, her life took an unexpected turn when she was discovered by JYP Entertainment in 2013 while out shopping in Osaka. By that point, Mina had already spent a year training at a K-pop dance studio, exploring new artistic paths beyond ballet.

Mina attended Obayashi Sacred Heart School in Takarazuka, Hyōgo, but chose to drop out in her second year of high school to pursue a career in K-pop. Moving to South Korea to train as a trainee at JYP Entertainment, she faced the challenge of adjusting to a new language, culture, and a strict training programme. Her ballet background gave her a unique ability in dance, and her graceful presence quickly made her stand out.

Interestingly, because she was born in the US, Mina held both Japanese and American citizenship. In 2019, however, she gave up her American citizenship, as Japanese law requires citizens to choose a single nationality by the age of 22.

TWICE

TWICE is a popular South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment. They officially debuted on 20 October 2015 with their first mini album “The Story Begins”. The group consists of nine members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu.

The long-established group has celebrated many successes in recent years. We've summarised the most important ones for you:

• Within five months of release, the music video for the title track "Like OOH-AHH" had been watched 50 million times. It was the most-viewed debut music video by a K-pop group. The video later even surpassed the 100 million mark.
• In 2016, the song "Cheer Up" became a massive hit and won "Song of the Year" at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA).
• In 2017, TWICE successfully debuted in Japan with the single "One More Time", which broke the record for the best-selling single by a K-pop girl group in Japan.
• In 2018, they held their first arena concert in Japan and released the Japanese album "BDZ", which reached number 1 on the Oricon Charts.
• In 2019, TWICE launched their world tour "TWICELIGHTS", which was a huge success and took them to cities all around the world.
• With the release of the singles "More & More" and "I CAN'T STOP ME", they achieved high chart rankings and cemented TWICE's status as a leading K-pop group.
• In 2021, they released their first English-language single "The Feels", which performed well on various international charts.
• In 2022, TWICE reached number 3 on the Billboard 200 with the album "Formula of Love: O+T=<3", their highest chart entry in the US.
• In 2023, TWICE released their twelfth mini album "Ready to Be" and announced their fifth world tour.

Mina is TWICE's ballet dancer.

Mina officially debuted as a member of TWICE in October 2015 with the release of their first mini album “The Story Begins”.

On 11 July 2019, JYP Entertainment announced that Mina would not take part in the remaining dates of the Twicelights World Tour due to extreme anxiety and insecurity around performing on stage. The decision was made to prioritise her mental health. Mina was later diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, which further highlighted the challenges faced by idols in the highly performance-driven K-pop industry.

MISAMO

On 9 February 2023, JYP Entertainment announced that Momo, together with fellow members Sana and Mina, would debut as “MiSaMo”, Twice's Japanese subunit. The subunit, whose name is formed from the first syllables of its three members Mina, Sana, and Momo, released their debut mini album “Masterpiece” on 26 July 2023. Even before its release, the single “Marshmallow” had already come out, followed by “Do Not Touch” as the lead single. MiSaMo celebrated their debut with a sold-out showcase tour in Osaka and Yokohama that thrilled over 40,000 fans. They celebrated their first comeback with the EP “Haute Couture”, released on 6 November 2024.

ILLUSTRATION

In early 2022, Mina was unveiled as the new muse of South Korean luxury fashion brand “Metrocity”. Just a few months later, in March, she was named global brand ambassador for the renowned Japanese cosmetics brand “SK-II”. Her influence in the world of fashion and beauty kept growing, and in August 2024, she was named Japan ambassador for the French luxury jewellery and watch brand “Boucheron”. Most recently, in January 2025, Mina was named Japan ambassador for the iconic Italian luxury fashion house “Fendi”.

FUN FACTS

• Mina's English name is Sharon Myōi.
• She loves ketchup, especially Heinz ketchup, and particularly enjoys eggs with ketchup – she has said she can eat pretty much anything with ketchup.
• She had a 17-year-old dachshund named Ray. Ray sadly passed away on 29 January 2024.
• Mina revealed that she is close friends with Lisa of BLACKPINK and that they often hang out together.
• Mina has a brother she rarely argues with. The only thing they've ever really fought over was who got to use the games console.
• She likes the colours purple and indigo.
• She doesn't talk to anyone when she's angry.
• Mina's favourite ballet production is “La Corsaire”.
