2022 was a year of girl groups, especially thanks to the many new rookie girl groups that debuted this year, such as Le sserafim, Nmixx or NewJeans. In no time at all, they won over the hearts of fans and stormed the charts! Thanks to NewJeans, 2023 also starts with girl power, because their second album "OMG" is being released on January 3!
Single Album OMG
As with the first album, there are several different versions to choose from this time as well: 6 Message Card versions and one Weverse Albums version.
Five Message Card versions are dedicated to the five members. So there is a Minji version, a Hanni version, a Danielle version, a Haerin version and a Hyein version. On top of that comes the NewJeans version. They all consist of a box that contains, besides the CD, a 52-page photo book, a lyrics paper, a message card set (25 pcs.), a photocard set (5 pcs.) and a sticker set (2 pcs.).
Some of the content will differ from version to version, because of course the Minji version will focus more on Minji, or the Haerin version on Haerin. Who is your bias in NewJeans?
Alternatively, we can also offer you the Weverse Albums version. Buyers get a box with a 28-page lyrics paper, one of 3 possible QR cards and a photocard set.
With the QR card, you can access digital content such as the songs and exclusive photos or videos. The Weverse Albums version will make the hearts of photocard fans beat faster in particular, because the set consists of 10 different cards! Still, a bit of surprise remains, because buyers randomly get one of three different sets.
Several concept teasers have already been uploaded on Twitter, such as an animated card with a snowman and the phrase “Winter is coming” on it. So we can look forward to a wintry single.
As with the first album, NewJeans is once again shortening the wait with a pre-release single. It will be released in just one week, on December 19.
With OMG, the young girl group celebrates its first comeback!
The new album has to live up to high expectations, because the debut album attracted a lot of attention. Maybe you remember, but if not, let's take another look back:
NewJeans surprised the K-Pop scene when, on July 22, 2022, a music video for the new song “Attention” was released without any warning or promotion. It thrilled the masses and topped both the Circle Charts (formerly “Gaon”) and the Billboard Charts! In addition, the music video was viewed more than 1.3 million times in less than 24 hours.
The next day, the debut album was officially announced, which, like the girl group itself, is called “NewJeans”. Besides Attention, two more songs from the album - “Hybe Boy” and “Hurt” - were released in advance. These two pre-release singles also reached high chart positions and increased the anticipation for the official debut even further!
On August 1, NewJeans finally made their debut with their mini album “NewJeans” and the title track “Cookie”.
The album contains four songs in total: Cookie and the three pre-release singles. By that point, the girl group had already broken records! On July 28, it was announced that more than 444,000 copies of the album had been pre-ordered. More than any other debut album by a Korean girl group before!
All four songs took high places in all national charts such as Melon or Genie, and on the first day the album was streamed more than 2.06 million times on Spotify. That is also a record, because no other girl group that debuted in 2022 reached that many streams on the first day!
NewJeans also found appreciation outside of South Korea. Among other things, “Cookie”, “Attention” and “Hybe Boy” placed in the real-time charts of Japan's biggest music site “Line Music”.
With all the records and the attention, it is no wonder that NewJeans was nominated for 17 different prizes at the annual award shows!
The young girl group actually took three awards home with them: Next Leader Award (The Fact Music Awards), Best New Artist (Melon Music Awards) and Top 10 Artist (Melon Music Awards).
With their early success, NewJeans has raised high expectations, which Minji, Danielle, Haerin, Hyein and Hanni will hopefully live up to in the future as well. After hits like Attention and Hybe Boy, which quite a few K-Pop fans would name as their favorite songs of 2022, we too are of course very excited about the new songs.
